Did you know?

In 2018, Atlantic salmon were observed in the Miminegash River again after fifteen years! Atlantic salmon need uninterrupted access to the sea for annual migration, clean gravel-cobble stream beds for spawning, and clean, cool water with plenty of cover to thrive. Miminegash River is currently the only south-draining river in West Prince with Atlantic salmon!

Over the past few years, we’ve completed multiple projects focused specifically on learning more about and improving Atlantic salmon habitat in the Miminegash River. These projects have included:

  • Cold water temperature monitoring and research into the unique winter conditions that cause our streams to reach below 0 temperatures, forming frazzle ice.
  • Tree planting to improve diversity and canopy cover along streams that contain Atlantic salmon habitat.
  • Replacing culverts and bridges to restore blocked fish passage and water flow where needed.

Thanks to support from our communities and partners, we have been able to make significant progress understanding, planning, and bettering our watershed for everyone!
