We wanted to give a shoutout to the Foundation of Conservation of Atlantic Salmon for supporting our Atlantic salmon project this year! Thanks to FCAS, we were able to install data loggers measuring temperature and water quality at 25 monitoring sites, improve water flow by notching 15 beaver dams, and replace 3 culverts to improve fish passage in the Miminegash River. Our goal this year was to reduce high surface water temperatures that negatively impact Atlantic salmon. When the flow of water slows due to blockages and sedimentation, water temperatures increase significantly, which negatively impacts many fish species including Atlantic salmon. Thanks to our efforts this year, surface water temperatures in secondary streams and estuaries have already been noticeably reduced!
